My New Favorite Translation

And Yahweh is the one who goes ahead of you; He will be with you. He will not fail you or forsake you. Do not fear or be dismayed. – Deuteronomy 31:8 (LSB)

Does that verse sound a little off? (In an intriguing way?) It’s from my new favorite translation – the Legacy Standard Bible. It’s basically a tweaked NASB 95, my old favorite translation. The biggest difference is the use of Yahweh when YHWH appears in the Old Testament text. If you read my posts last year on the names of God, you know how I feel about names. GOD IS NOT HIS NAME!

In south Texas it’s common for teachers to be called, “Teacher.” Teacher describes what they do. It isn’t who they are. Yahweh is the beautiful covenant name of the El Most High, our Elohim. It obliterates all doubt as to the who of the god we worship and the why. If you missed them, check out the two links above.

And you can read it for free! It’s in Blue Letter Bible and Bible Gateway.

NASB 95 is still my favorite pair of jeans. Comfortable and broken in just right.

ESV – my workhorse for study

HCSB – my favorite to listen to. It sounds conversational.

and LSB? It’s like a makeover that makes you feel like a million bucks.

What about you?

  • Hashem, The Name

This week’s name is The Name. Sounds like a riff on “Who’s on First?” “What’s the name this week?” “The Name.” “Right, the name. What is it?” “I told you, The Name.” “That’s what I’m asking. What. Is. The. Name?” “That’s it!” This week in Ann Spangler’s study, we’re looking at Hashem. Technically, it’s not…

  • The Light of the World

Now that we’ve moved into the names of Jesus, you might think we’d start with Jesus’s birth. No, Ann Spangler takes us back to the beginning. John’s gospel doesn’t have a nativity account. He goes all the way back to the beginning. In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and…

  • Jesus, My Savior

Jesus isn’t just the Savior, He’s my Savior. Christ died for my sins. He was buried for my sins. He was raised on the third day so I could spend eternity with him. This week’s name is Savior, and I can’t let it pass without telling you who Jesus is to me. I grew up in a church-going household, and I don’t think I’ve…
