What’s in a name?

YHWH. The tetragrammaton. Yahweh. That’s the name we’re looking at this week.

I have been like a kid on a car trip asking, “Are we there yet?” in anticipation of this post.  I’m going to send you to a post that will blow your ever-loving mind.

Click here. Do it. You’ll be glad you did. I’ll wait. Then come back.

Mind. Blown. Right?

Behold the nail. Behold the hand. YHWH points to Jesus.

It gets better. Jesus’s Hebrew name is Yeshua. (יְשׁוּעָה)

The LORD (Ya) is my strength and my song, and He has become my salvation. Exodus 15:2a

Do you know what the Hebrew word for salvation is? If you know how to look that up, go ahead. If not, here’s the Blue Letter Bible link. Now scroll down to salvation.

Salvation is Yehoshua in Hebrew!

Putting it all together, YHWH means “Behold the nailed hand – which is salvation.”

  • The Word

This week’s name, The Word, is so much more than a name. It’s the very essence of Jesus. John tells us about this Word. In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God. All things came into being through Him,…

You’ve heard of good cop, bad cop? Let’s talk good shepherd, bad shepherd. Jesus says He’s the Good Shepherd. Who are the bad shepherds? You eat the fat and clothe yourselves with the wool, you slaughter the fat sheep without feeding the flock. Those who are sickly you have not strengthened, the diseased you have not healed, the broken you have…

  • Child

For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given. – Isaiah 9:6a For this week’s name of Jesus, we turn again to Isaiah. Because, despite what Andy Stanley might say, unhitching from the Old Testament is a really bad idea. The Old Testament adds depth and context, an understanding of God’s…

  • Jesus Christ, our Messiah

For all of Peter’s fumbles, you gotta love his boldness, his willingness to be the first to acknowledge Jesus for who he is. Now when Jesus came into the region of Caesarea Philippi, He was asking His disciples, “Who do people say that the Son of Man is?” And they said, “Some say John the Baptist; and others, Elijah; and still others, Jeremiah, or one of the other prophets.” He said to…
