Christmas 23

Jesus, the Nazarene, King of the Jews – Part 7

When I was a child, my mind wandered during the sermon. (Shocker.) Looking at the crucifix, I wondered about the “INRI” hanging above Jesus. What I know now but didn’t know then is that it stands for IESVS NAZARENVS REX IVDÆORVM. Jesus, the Nazarene, King of the Jews.

Now Pilate also wrote an inscription and put it on the cross. It was written: “JESUS THE NAZARENE, THE KING OF THE JEWS.” John 19:19

Pilate wrote the inscription in Jewish Aramaic, Latin, and Greek for all to see. That rankled the chief priests. They told Pilate to change it to, “He says he is King of the Jews.” Pilate refused. Why? And why is it important?

In the twenty-first century, we don’t think too much about the King of the Jews. David’s throne has been vacant since 586 BC. But to the first century Jew, Pilate’s inscription was a scandal and an outrage.

Were the Jews still looking for David’s heir?

Jeremiah, the same prophet who told Jeconiah in 597 BC that none of his descendants would sit on David’s throne prophesied around ten years later during Zedekiah’s reign that a righteous Branch of David would come forth.

Isaiah also tells us about this coming heir of David.

On that day the Branch of the LORD will be beautiful and glorious, and the fruit of the earth will be the pride and the beauty of the survivors of Israel. – Isaiah 4:2

Then a shoot will spring from the stem of Jesse,
And a Branch from his roots will bear fruit.
The Spirit of the LORD will rest on Him,
The spirit of wisdom and understanding,
The spirit of counsel and strength,
The spirit of knowledge and the fear of the LORD. – Isaiah 11:1-2
This branch of David, this shoot of Jesse, was the Anointed, the Messiah the Jews had been waiting for.
Speaking of shoots and branches, there are so many different directions I want to go right now. FOCUS. Squirrel!
The religious leaders knew the Messiah had to be the heir to the throne of David. And they knew Jesus had a claim on it. How? Ancestry.com.
The Jewish elite knew their bloodlines. And Joseph, Jesus’s dad, had been David’s heir. Who was next? Bingo. Jesus.
Pilate knew it. He didn’t make up the claim.
The chief priests knew it. They knew it, even though they disputed it. Why? They believed Jesus was illegitimate. He was known as the son of Mary. And they expected their Messiah to come in power, restoring the Kingdom.
Oh, He will.
Pilate’s sign was entirely accurate. Jesus, humble craftsman, itinerant rabbi, and accused criminal, was the King of the Jews.
This is what I want you to take away from this Christmas series.
-Jesus fulfilled Isaiah and Jeremiah’s prophecies. He is our coming King.
-Jesus was Joseph’s legal heir, his oldest son. If Joseph had had other sons from a previous marriage, one of them would have been the heir.
-It always made me sad that Joseph was out of the picture before Jesus started his public ministry. But Joseph had to die for Jesus to inherit the title of King of the Jews.
-What about David’s throne? It’s been empty since Nebuchadnezzar destroyed Jerusalem. BUT IT WON’T BE EMPTY FOREVER! In the millennial kingdom, Jesus will sit on David’s throne. I don’t know about you, but I can’t wait! Maranatha
Jesus WAS and IS and always WILL BE the King of the Jews.
