The Lord Will Provide the Lamb

Abraham said, “God will provide for Himself the lamb for the burnt offering, my son.” So the two of them walked on together. Genesis 22:8

I love following bread crumb trails in Scripture. Types, foreshadowing, fulfilled prophecy, double meaning – in searching them down, I feel like a treasure hunter.

I still remember the first time I understood the double meaning of Abraham’s declaration, “God will provide for Himself the lamb.” It stopped me in my tracks. That was my first glimpse of the genius of God. Abraham had no idea that one day, the Lamb of God would take away the sin of the world.

For those who remember Monty Python, “And now for something completely different.”

I read a really depressing statistic from the Colson Center this week.

A new study confirms that more Americans identify as religiously unaffiliated than as Roman Catholics.

The U.S. has more “nones” than Catholics. How can that be? J. Warner Wallace has said,

Apathy-ism probably is the biggest challenge to theism, not atheism.

Bingo. I think we get so distracted by either all the shiny things or the responsibilities and worries pulling us in different directions that we lose sight of the most important thing. Jesus loved me (and you!) so much that He died in our place. So take a breath and meditate for a moment on what His sacrifice means for you.

As a writer, I love popping little hints of things to come in my stories. Those little reader “Aha” moments are so much fun. Can’t you imagine God’s joyful anticipation of the day when we, His children, realize the significance of John the Baptist’s declaration?

Behold, the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world!

Knowing The Lord Will Provide brings me to my knees in humble thankfulness for His death in our place.

Yahweh Yireh, thank you for providing the sacrifice in Isaac’s stead. Thank you for dying in my place. I will spend eternity praising your Name and rejoicing in Your salvation.
